IoT

Visiting technology conferences for last few month I discover the new buzz word IoT
Basically, nothing new versus M2M, but one aspect I found interesting – it is the SCALE.
So, from what IoT stands for? The first letter “I” has prematurely association to “Internet” with the main meaning of connectivity over IPv6. The involvement of IPv6 came just from the size of the problem. If we'll look deeply in the applicability of IPv6 we quickly found that it will not work. One exception that IPv6 has a technical possibility to enumerate all sensors, but immediately after that point all advantages of IPv6 are ended and many troubles arise. That's why smart people associated “I” with “Intelligence”. They do not bind any current technology the the buzz word, so they have a freedom to elaborate on “Intelligence of Things”, but really smart people do not stop, they expand to the “IoE” buzz word, “Internet of Everything” or “Intelligence of Everything”... Who knows? It sounds just right!

So, three big problem are coming in the scale and complexity bigger than we've dealt with anything before:

  1. Connectivity to sensors and data transfer to and from Things/Everything
  2. Trust, not a security which is just a technology, but Trust which is the fundamental aspect
  3. Data Analytics or The Big Data

All current players are identify themselves with these areas
  • Freescale, Qualcom, TI and others jump in the cosmos of sensors. They all see the great volume in the shipment of devices.
  • Intel & Cisco to the IoT gateways or the checkpoint devices to establish Trust and Security between sensors and cloud.
  • IBM proclaimed itself the King of Data Analytics. Most likely GOOGLE or ORACLE will challenge IBM's statement very soon.

Well, for me it seems no one exactly knows what to do, instead (as usually) everyone wants promote the exiting product and/or indicate their position on the coming market.
I see it bit differently, I think we have to develop all new technologies almost from scratch and address all new aspects of IoT/IoE in the design, just because the stretching of old technologies to the new requirements works rarely and we all learned this fact many many times.
So, what to do? Unfortunately the margin in this post is too small for the explanation and details...

Probably I will do it next time
